Serenity danced and swayed, softly turned in the black. It made Simon smile. For the first time since Osiris, Simon could almost believe he had his sister back. Or at least some form of her.
He leaned back against the wall and watched her delicate ministrations of the ship as she piloted Serenity through the black. She was in her element. He could tell from the way she eyed the controls and the read outs on the monitors she was not merely getting a "feel" for the ship, she was making lightning quick calculations and adjustments as she went. But to the casual observer, she was a "natural" and she just seemed to take to the position of pilot much like Wash had.
Maybe Wash had been a genius in his own right too.
A feeling of pride and grief poured through Simon as he watched his sister in Wash's chair, doing Wash's job, and becoming so much more than she had ever been before. She was getting better, and it had less to do with the concoction of smoothers he had formulated than with where she was now seated.
Simon had been so lost in thought he hadn't noticed the tall woman standing at his side in the doorway watching the lithe young woman with him.
"She's doing good, Doctor. Should be proud," Zoe said, handing him an apple as she did so.
He jumped slightly, startled by her sudden appearance. He gave a slight lopsided smile and gratefully took the apple. As he took a bite, River looked coyly over her shoulder at them and smiled widely when Zoe tossed her an apple as well. He sighed softly as River took a huge bite into her apple, grinning all the while. "I am."
